Students, faculty and staff: To check out library materials, you must present your own valid Radford University ID Card at the Front Desk. Faculty and staff may arrange for specific people to check out materials for them by submitting a Checkout Authorization Card, which is available at the Front Desk or online. A Checkout Authorization Card must be completely filled out and on file at the Library before proxy checkouts can occur. A new card must be filled out each semester, for each person for whom permission is granted.
Public patrons: You are eligible for a public patron library card if you are a Virginia resident. In order to receive a public patron card, you must present a valid Virginia driver's license or a military ID or passport along with verification of address. (Virginia Tech and VCOM students, faculty, and staff may simply present their Hokie Passports as sufficient identification.) We require the signature and identification (presented in-person) of a parent or guardian for patrons under the age of 18 who request public patron cards.
Library materials should be returned on or before the date due. Some materials are renewable and can be renewed either by contacting the Front Desk, in person, or through the online catalog.
To request renewals online, go to Library Services on the library's web page. Select “My Library Account”. Log in, and then select the “currently checked out” link. Then select the items you wish to renew, and click Renew Selected. Or, simply click Renew All to request renewal of all of your items at once. Be sure to verify the status of the items you selected to renew. The status will show either RENEWED with new due dates, or will indicate why items were not renewed.
If an item is not on the shelf, and not showing as checked out in the online catalog, stop at the Front Desk for assistance. The item could be in the process of being reshelved. A search for an item can be requested at the Front Desk. You may also request that a checked-out item be held for you when it is returned.
If an item is needed by another user, it may be recalled and assigned an earlier due date than the date assigned at check-out. You will be notified by mail if an item is being recalled. You may also request that checked-out items be recalled and held for you. You will be notified when the item has been returned and is being held for you at the Front Desk.
The following equipment is available for RU students and employees for 3-day checkout; it is not renewable. It can be checked out and returned at the Front Desk. Click equipment name for more information and current availability. Patrons are strongly encouraged to book equipment in advance by calling the Front Desk at 540-831-5364.

Additional fines are charged for items damaged beyond normal wear and tear. Replacement charges and processing fees are assessed when items are not returned.
Overdue fines are not charged to faculty and staff (or their registered family members), or to Graduate Teaching Fellows (GTFs) who are currently teaching classes. However, faculty, staff, family, and GTF borrowing privileges may be suspended for users who have long-overdue items.
To view your fines online, go to Library Services on the library's web page. Select “My Library Account”. Log in, and then you will see a screen showing your current fines. Fine payments are handled at the Front Desk. The Front Desk accepts cash, checks, and RU Express. Credit cards are not accepted. Unpaid charges may result in registration, transcript, and diploma blocks for current and former students, as well as suspension of borrowing privileges. Patrons with unpaid charges are submitted to the Virginia Debt Setoff program, and amounts due will be withheld from state tax refunds or other state sources of income.
The library sends notification of overdue materials and fine notices by email. Final bills are sent by postal mail. Library patrons should notify the Front Desk of any change to email addresses, postal addresses, or phone numbers. Library fines can be viewed from “My Library Account.”
